Lions District 201 T1

Tasmania, Australia

District Governor Vere Cooper 2018-19

District Governor Badge and Photo

Vere is a charter member of the Lions club of Devonport Mersey and was also a member of the Lions Club of Launceston South for almost 20 years.  He returned to the Devonport Mersey club in 2000.  He has been president of both clubs and held all board positions.  He is a Melvin Jones Fellow and a Tasmanian Lions Foundation Fellow.  Vere has served on cabinet as Zone Chairman, Regional Chairman and Vice District Governor.

He is married to Cheryl.  They have five children from their first marriages and six grandchildren.  They are very involved in their local church and enjoy travelling around Australia in their self contained vehicle.

Vere grew up on King Island and graduated from the University of Tasmania as a civil engineer.  He retired from engineering in 2012 and from grazing cattle on King Island in 2017.  He has also been a consulting engineer, a part time TAFE lecturer, a Building Surveyor and a private pilot.  He is now retired and enjoys playing golf and bridge.

His theme for the year is 'ADVANCE CHANGE'.  Key District goals centre on mentoring new members for the first three years to help stabilise membership numbers, and advancing the option of forming branch clubs.  It is also important for members to learn how to utilise online resources.  To some extent we are a victim of our own past success at retaining members.  About 20 members die each year and membership has dropped by 50 in the last two years.

Vere's 2018 Convention theme is 'Lions in a Digital World'.  The convention is being held at the Reece High School, Devonport from 10th to 11 November 2018.

2018-19 is the first year that Lions Clubs International has had an International President, who is female and also the first representative from Iceland.  Her name is Gudrun Yngvadottir.  She is a biomedical scientist and Vice Director of the Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Iceland.  She has launched 'New Voices - Over the Horizon' to encourage more females to become members, and also take on leadership roles.  Immediate Past District Governor Hester van Niekerk is Tasmania's first 'New Voice'.

President Gudrun and her husband have a small yacht and think in terms of sailing over the horizon and through the 2018-19 year.  As a former private pilot, I think in terms of flying over the horizon.  I have thus incorporated a photo of a Cessna 172 aircraft on my pin.
