District Governor 2017-18
District Governor Hester van Niekerk writes:
Michael my husband and I were born in South Africa, lived in Rhodesia then immigrated to Australia in October 1979. We have 3 married daughters and seven grandchildren living in Tasmania.
Michael joined Blundstone Boot Manufacturing Company in 1979, retired in 2012 as Head of Product Design and Development.
I joined the Department of Veteran Affairs at the Repatriation Hospital Hobart. Whilst at the Repat I completed my Bachelor of Applied Science and retired from Nursing as the Clinical Director in 1993.
Later I completed an Early Childhood Diploma retiring once again in 2015 but still maintain a strong connection with local schools, parents and children. My civic interests include volunteering with schools and community events. I am a ‘one eyed’ Sydney Swans supporter and make no apologies for being very biased regarding my family.
In 2010 I was invited to join the Lions Club of Kingborough, became their first female President and was honoured with a Melvin Jones in 2014. I have a firm belief that the awards that I have been awarded are only worth something if I continue to work for my Club, community and Lions within our district.
My objective for the year is……. “Club + Community, together we can”. We need to look after and support those that make up our Lions family first. If we achieve this, the ‘rest’ will join…..even if it is 1 new member at a time. Each Club’s membership only needs to be in the positive by 1 for 2017-2018.
